Old homes deserve careful work. Finding Solid Fixing Points In VJ And Old Hardwood

The classic Ashgrovian Queenslander hides its structure well. Vertical joint boards give you a rhythm of grooves that has nothing to do with where the studs actually are, and a stud finder that behaves perfectly in a newer estate can go quiet or give false reads across old, dense timber and layered linings. So we read the wall before we touch it — board joins, skirting returns, the framing visible in the room next door, sounding it out by hand, and a small, considered test where it genuinely helps. Old hardwood turns up in unexpected places too: studs sitting off any standard centre, noggins added during a renovation decades ago, a stray brace behind a chimney breast, top plates lower than you'd expect under a raked ceiling. Once you've found that hardwood it is superb to fix into — it grips a screw in a way modern pine simply doesn't. The skill is locating it honestly, and knowing what to do when the height you want the screen at happens to fall between two of them.

Respecting The Home While We Work

Careful drilling matters as much as careful finding. We size each hole to the fixing rather than wallowing it out to force a bracket into line, use sharp bits so a VJ board face doesn't blow out around the entry, and catch the dust as we go rather than letting it settle into the boards. If a bracket needs to shift slightly to land on something solid, we shift the bracket and keep the screen where you want it, instead of asking hundred-year-old timber to accept a hole it shouldn't have. Cabling runs out of sight wherever the wall allows it; where a lined or solid wall doesn't have the cavity for it, we say so plainly and offer a tidy alternative rather than cutting the character out of a room to chase a hidden cable. Drop sheets go down, the mess goes with us, and the wall is left looking like the television was always meant to be there.
